Purpose

This checklist provides a step-by-step validation guide to safely apply a new LMS license and handle encrypted passwords correctly. It is intended to prevent startup failures, authentication errors, and post-license configuration issues.

Use this checklist during license renewals, replacements, or upgrades.

 

Pre-License Change Checklist

Back up ekp.properties

  • Create a secure backup before making any changes

Identify encrypted properties

  • Database credentials (default.encryptedPassword)

  • SMTP, LDAP, SSO, JMS, payment, or external integration passwords

Obtain plain text credentials

  • Ensure all required passwords are available and verified

Restrict access

  • Confirm only authorized administrators can access the file during the change

 

License Change Execution Checklist

Revert encrypted passwords to plain text

  • Remove or comment out encrypted properties

  • Restore corresponding plain text values

Save and verify ekp.properties

  • Check for typos, extra spaces, or formatting issues

Apply the new LMS license

  • Follow standard license application procedure

Start or restart the LMS service

  • Allow the system to fully initialize

Confirm successful startup

  • No database or authentication errors

  • LMS UI is accessible

 

Post-License Change Checklist

Log in as full Admin

  • Required to access password encryption tools

Generate new encrypted passwords
Navigate to:
Manage Center → System → Encrypt Password

Update ekp.properties with new encrypted values

  • Replace plain text passwords

  • Ensure only encrypted values are active

Restart the LMS service

  • Required for changes to take effect

 

Validation Checklist

☐ LMS starts without errors
☐ Database connectivity is confirmed
☐ Email notifications function correctly (if applicable)
☐ Integrations (LDAP, SSO, payment, APIs) work as expected
☐ No plain text passwords remain in ekp.properties

 

Common Mistakes to Avoid

☒ Leaving encrypted passwords from the old license
☒ Copying encrypted values from another environment
☒ Leaving both plain text and encrypted properties active
☒ Forgetting to restart the LMS after updates
☒ Leaving plain text passwords in place after validation

  • Encrypted passwords are license-dependent
